چکیده

Translational neuroscience in the field of spinal cord injuries (SCI) faces a strong disproportion between immense preclinical research efforts and a lack of therapeutic approaches successful in human patients: Currently, preclinical research on SCI yields more than 3,000 new publications per year (8,000 when including the whole central nervous system, growing at an exponential rate), whereas none of the resulting therapeutic concepts has led to functional recovery of neural tissue in humans. Improving clinical researchers’ information access therefore carries the potential to support more effective selection of promising therapy candidates from preclinical studies. Thus, automated information extraction from scientific publications contributes to enabling meta studies and therapy grading by aggregating relevant information from the entire body of previous work on SCI. We present SCIE, an automated information extraction pipeline capable of detecting relevant information in SCI publications based on ontological entity and probabilistic relation detection. The input are plain text or PDF documents. As output, the user choses between an online visualization or a machine-readable format. Compared to human gold standard annotations, our system achieves an average extraction performance of 76 % precision and 52 % recall (F1-measure 0.59). An instance of the webservice is available at http://scie.sc.cit-ec.uni-bielefeld.de/. SCIE is free software licensed under the AGPL and can be downloaded for local installation at http: //opensource.cit-ec.de/projects/scie/. ∗To whom correspondence should be addressed.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells as an Alternative for Schwann Cells in Rat Spinal Cord Injury

Background: Spinal cord has a limited capacity to repair therefore, medical interventions are necessary for treatment of injuries. Transplantation of Schwann cells has shown a great promising result for spinal cord injury (SCI). However, harvesting Schwann cell has been limited due to donor morbidity and limited expansion capacity. Furthermore, accessible sources such as bone marrow stem cells ...

Why does the central nervous system not regenerate after injury?

A major problem for neuroscientists and clinicians is why the central nervous system shows ineffective regeneration after injury. Injured peripheral nerve fibers reform their connections, whereas those in injured spinal cord never re-grow. Insights into the mechanisms for repair and restoration of function after spinal cord injury have been obtained by experiments showing that injured nerve cel...

A clinically oriented experiment on the effect of mixed culture of neonate spinal cord transplantation on recovery of spinal cord injury

In spinal cord injuries, direct trauma by edges of sublaxated or dislocated vertebrae and indirect ischemia as a result of vascular injury necrotize the neural tissue. After spinal cord injury, tissue loss appears as micro- or macrocavitation. Accumulations of non-neuronal cells substitute spared tissue and halts axon regrowth. Lack of supporting cells (secreting trophic factors and matrix) agg...

Factors Affecting Post Traumatic growth in Patients with Spinal Cord Injury: A Phenomenological Study

Introduction: Spinal cord injury is one of the problems of human societies, which causes many physical and emotional problems for a person and will have consequences for personal, family and social problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenological factors affecting post-traumatic growth in patients with spinal cord injury. Methods: The qualitative research project was ...
